Summertime is in full swing and, oftentimes, we find ourselves outside much longer than we had planned. Growing up, I was always handed a Gatorade, Powerade, or Kool-Aid to drink in the summer. The problem with these drinks is that they are LOADED with sugar. What are some healthy alternatives to these drinks?

Here are my 3 favorites:

Coconut water

This is my absolute favorite for rehydrating. There are many different brands out there, but just make sure the only ingredient is coconut water. Coconut water is naturally high in electrolytes, such as potassium, magnesium, and sodium, so it is great for rehydrating and providing the essential electrolytes you need. Dr. Axe has a great article on the other benefits of coconut water.

Homemade Lemonade

This brings back such good memories, but now we have a much healthier way to make it, thanks to Stevia and the essential oil revolution. Citrus fruits are very refreshing and, when using essential oils, you don’t have to worry about your tooth enamel being affected. Simply fill a glass or pitcher with filtered or reverse osmosis water, put a drop or two of essential oils in (this is where I get mine) and Stevia, to taste. You can also try with lime, grapefruit, tangerine, or lavender oils.

Watermelon

This is definitely a summertime favorite. Watermelon is loaded with Vitamin C, potassium, and other antioxidants and minerals to leave you feeling hydrated and cool. Plus, it also contains L-citrulline, an amino acid that aids in muscle recovery, so it is great post-workout. It is mostly water and also aids the kidneys in flushing and detoxification. What better reasons to enjoy!

So, the next time you are planning a day at the pool or beach, be sure to trade out the sports drink for one of the above and find your self feeling better and staying more hydrated!
